<<Okay audio peeps>>

Okay...

<<My friend just made a custom box for his Volcano 12' and finally got
it all hooked up.>>

Kool...

<<But now when he turns down the volume or turns the car off, he gets a
sharp thump from the sub, even if he hits his brake a little, he gets a
thud.>>

Yup. Sounds like a grounding problem.

<<I think it's in his ground..>>

Good call :-)

<<Another problem he's having is with another amp's power going to some
6 by 9's. All that is coming from the speakers is a whine that can be
turned up or down on the amp with the level settings, any helpful
hints?>>

Sounds like his speakers are somehow isolating the engine noise. Again,
have him check the grounds, and also the polarity of the connections.
Also make sure that the speakers, wires, and connections at the speakers
are not touching any part of the body (read metal) of the car.

<<I know that the ground is the first to check, but what else?>>

You are a smart man. Check all connections, check for frays in the
wiring, and make sure that everything is hooked up properly.

<<To make this Sentra related, i get a slight thump when i turn off my
subs too, so i'm wonderin for myself too.>>

There are 2 ways to fix "speaker thump". The first (and in my view the
easiest) is to hook a toggle switch between the amp and the stereo or
indash EQ via the remote wire. Right before turning the stereo off
(hopefully it turns off with the car), flip the toggle switch so that
the amp "thinks" the stereo has been turned off.

The second is to install relays to the amp so that it turns off at the
same time as your stereo.

What you and your friend are experiencing is actually "lag" time between
the time that the stereo turns off and the time that the amp turns off.

Since your stereo gets it's power from the car's alternator (via the
fuse box or where ever you have it hooked up) and your amp gets it's
power from the battery (which is always active), the two are not
shutting off at the same time.

I think the toggle switch method will be the easiest solution to your
problem. As for your friend, sounds like he has a lot of problems with
his system, so trouble shooting is going to be his best solution.

Post whatever else you two find and I'll try to help the best I can. If
I can't help, there are plenty here that can :-)
