Man there are some messed up theories floating around in here. First off
turn on thump is not directly related to amp quality. If you read many amp
spec. sheets, they actually measure the turn on and turn off thump in DB's.
It's not a bad thing! Some of the best systems in the world have this thump
present. Delay, as stated, is dependant on two things, capacitance and
wether or not the amp has a delay circuit. Certain manufacturers build
delay circuits into their amps. to keep this thump from taking place! Look
at PPI, they make a gate specifically designed to keep you from hearing
this!
As for the 6 x 9 problem, is your friend using a line level converter? If
so check all the connections and see wether or not their is a factory amp
present. As for your ground, use a multimeter to test it. Make sure their
isn't excessive voltage present. Doing this will insure that you have a
noise free ground! And make sure you properly prep. the metal surface,
remove all paint and clean it! I like to use the Stinger GM side mount
battery posts for grounds! I buy a lock nut and some washers and when it's
mounted I can just remove the stud in order to connect/disconnect the
ground, while the grounding post can stay in the car!
Hope this helps.
