The new 56k modem is external. The old 33.6 modem is internal.
They're on different com ports, (the external is on 1, the internal
is on 4), so I wouldn't have expected a hardware clash.

I've solved the problem, by doing two things. First, I burned a new
diskette with my new preference for com port. That was the only
change on the diskette I burned. I would have thought that this
would be the same thing as changing the serial port via the admin web
page.

The second change was to physically remove the internal modem card.

The main change which seems to fix it is the first one. IOW, I just
rebooted the machine with the old internal modem installed, but the
new external modem floppy version, and it seems to work fine. So, I
guess the question is, what doesn't get changed when I try to use the
admin page to change the serial port? Should it? If not, why does
it even offer me the option of changing the serial port if it doesn't
take care of everything it needs to?

Anyway, it's good to have the problem resolved. Still waiting for
cable or ADSL in my neighborhood!

Thanks,
Mike Jesch
