Depends too on how long you can afford to have the car down for. It 
being your sons only car, you may want to do a quick re-ring and done 
in a weekend....if your looking at it being performance based, SRT4 
motor is the way to go, but finding all the hardware and electrical 
might take some time. If it's a show car, and you want it stock, I 
would go with the entire rebuild. All really depends on what you want 
out of it

Depends on your needs.  If you can search out and follow the
instructions, I would swap in an SRT-4 or PT Cruiser drivetrain.

It should pencil out less than a complete rebuild of a T2 drivetrain
with a rebuilt transmission and limited slip differential.

You'll need custom programming on your computer to do it, but there
are vendors available to fix that for you.
