Well, I'm not a computer maven. I outlined the problems I was having with my machine a couple of months ago. Turns out the major problems were hardware related - processor fan died causing the processor to overheat which caused the mother board to burn up. Replaced (or rather had replaced) the mother board, powersupply, processor, etc. Problems continued for a couple months. I eventually had a really good mother board and hard drive installed. Problems seem to have disappeared.

During the "100 Day War" with my machine I spent a lot of time looking at Apple Computers. The G3, G4, imac, PowerMac, etc. I spent countless hours in Apple dealer's stores playing with the machines. I concluded that the only Mac I could buy that would do what I can do with my Win98SE was the 933 power Mac. That's a $2400 machine. However, more problems arose while considering the Mac. My printer, scanner, and $$$$ worth of software won't work with the Mac. So, add the price for new peripherals and comparable software and I'm looking at something in the $3500 range.

The iMac is an interesting and innovative machine but there are so many drawbacks - e.g., very little expansion room for added memory or internal peripherals, that the $1800 tag makes it an really expensive, innovative "toy." The 933 is a good machine but a lot of what Apple claims for it doesn't really work in operation. I have this first hand from my son, who's a programmer and who bought a 933 Mac with the intention of using the iDVD/iMovie function to convert family home movies to DVD. The machine didn't do what it Apple claimed. I won't go on about this, however.

I'm not knocking the Mac. What I'm saying is that if you are currently a Win user and you change systems to Mac, be aware that you're going to be spending a hell of a lot of dough on "extras." If however a person was starting new, Macs are probably the way to go. But in either case be confident and aware of the fact that no matter which system you select - they will break down.

I had Win2K Pro on this machine for a while. I took it off and reinstalled Win98SE. Works for me.

Cub, XP didn't come out until about 6 months after I got the new puter.    38.7 GB HD, 384 MB RAM, 1.25 GB Processor.    $1400.00 w/no programs except Windows ME.     Apple tells me they can build me a better machine for about the same money, 60 GB HD, 256 RAM, 2.0 GB Processor, 6 USB ports.   PLus all the programs, Word Processor, Spread Sheet, Access, Photo, etc, etc.    For an extra $100.00 I can have the RAM increased to 512 MB.
