Not golf - computers
I see a lot of positive Mac responses, and I have nothing
against Mac (use to have one for a while). But the biggest question you
need to ask yourself is:
What am I going to use this box for?
You got a real business and running a financial application?
Realistically not on Mac you are. Needing to set up web server and
application server to enable your database so that you can book real
time orders dependent upon your supply chain. Realistically not on Mac
are you. Developing a golf app you want to share/sell to your peers
that is web enabled, and want to keep licensing costs to a minimum (ie:
free databases, etc). Realistically, not on Mac are you.
Let's
face it, its the applications, not the box itself, which dictates the
value you get from a computer. I know for what I use a computer
for, Mac isn't an option as there are no applications available. I get
the "graphics" speech at time, but lets face it, if you are doing
serious graphics work (say using Lightwave) when was the last Mac
release? It is much more supported in MS and Linux as well as flavors
of UNIX (IRIX).
Even the major studios don't use it. It use to be
that IRIX and DigitalUNIX (now Tru64UNIX) were the ones, but there is a
stronger influence of MS and Linux. (As far as Linux, imagine being
able to create a large cluster (Beowulf) with no additional licensing
costs and process your rendering needs in 1/4th the time. There is
value in reduced time to market.)
Again not trying to slam Mac
(remember I use to own one), its just that you should do your homework
on what you need it to do before you make the purchase.
Even
Apple doesn't use their stuff to run there
business.
