* I have tried some of the web sites that try to break into your computer to test your security. (At least some of them are selling protection, so they are motivated to do a good job of breaking in, so they can scare you into buying their protection.) None of them has ever gotten anything of value through my ZoneAlarm firewall.
* Occasionally, you will try to do something (usually with a new application, or a new feature on an old app, or an upgrade), and it won't work. It will look like your modem is broken. Before you panic about the modem, pull up the ZoneAlarm page, find the application in the ZoneAlarm list, and be sure it has permission to access the line. That's part of your protection; nobody can plant a Trojan Horse program on your computer that will call out from inside, when ZoneAlarm is on the job.
Hope this helps.

Arnie,
Here is web site, look around and read up on it and download the free version. Pretty simple, but you have to trust it and then keep teaching it to allow what you want to use and to access to the internet and from the internet. They start with a good set of rules, but sometimes it can be confusing. If you are on a broadband or always on connection to the internet this is a true must.

If anyone here is not running a local firewall, I *highly* recommend ZoneAlarm. A copy of basic ZA is free.
And where does one go to obtain this "free" ZoneAlarm? Does it work on Windows 98?
This dummy needs to know :-)
