Next, the standard disclaimer that comes with any instructions to dink with the registry is something along the lines of "screwing with your registry can cause OS problems -- be sure you know what you're doing." This is mostly a liability avoidance thing.
And, as for the initial uninstallation problems, everyone should understand by now that most MS operating systems, especially 95 and 98, are basically crap and riddled with "problematic" programming. Anytime an OS allows an application to replace a system file, you know there's trouble brewing. Anyone who has run any flavor of 95, 98, and even some of the earlier cuts of NT, for any length of time knows they are chock full o' bugs. System bugs can and do affect things like how programs run and whether or not install and uninstall routines can achieve complete success.
Ultimately, I may be a little more knowledgeable than some about the workings of computers, but, when the fix requires nothing more than the ability to edit text, I can't see where I'm at such an advantage.
But, hey, don't let me stop you. If you prefer to believe that ZA was the source of your problems, it's no skin off my back. I have no vested interest in ZoneLabs. Whether or not anyone here avails himself of this free protection or any of the other similar free or paid applications is of no importance to me whatsoever. As the saying goes, I got mine.

What you're "missing" is this. My complaint is relatively simple. As I said, I followed the original uninstall instructions to the letter. They didn't work. I also said that I am uncomfortable messing with the OS, the .bat, and the config.sys files. You may well know a lot about Windows and operating systems. I don't.It seems to me pretty obvious that any software mfr that provides "simple" instructions to load or unload their program from a system should work. . The second set of instructions that came from ZA included the warning that "following these instructions may cause operational damage to your system" or words to that effect. That should be enough to scare anyone. What you're missing is that not all of us here are computer wizards. We just want the damn things to work, and we want programs to do what they say they'll do without aggravation. Along with most others here, I appreciate your help when problems like this arise. But fooling with OS is well beyond the scope of the expertise of most of us here, I think.
