The biggest advantage of ZAPro is the ability to do port level security on a blanket or per-machine basis. I've found it to be extremely useful when I was serving data to specific people via http or ftp. Also makes it very easy to let all the machines on our VPN at work talk directly to me at home while keeping out all the other nasty buggers.

One comment I forgot in the previous post...

One thing I really like about ZA is that it "black holes" incoming packets. IOW, when an unauthorized attempt is made to access your machine, ZA just eats the packet and send back no response. To the bad guys, it looks like your machine doesn't exist. They won't spend much time on a machine that looks to be nonexistent.

I've been using ZA for over a year, and it seems to help. Upgraded to the "pro" version a couple of months ago, but I don't see a whole lot of difference between it and the free version, other than getting some upgrades. The free version will probably cover most everything you need.

Arnie,

Here is web site, look around and read up on it and download the free version. Pretty simple, but you have to trust it and then keep teaching it to allow what you want to use and to access to the internet and from the internet. They start with a good set of rules, but sometimes it can be confusing. If you are on a broadband or always on connection to the internet this is a true must.

If anyone here is not running a local firewall, I *highly* recommend
ZoneAlarm. A copy of basic ZA is free.

And where does one go to obtain this "free" ZoneAlarm? Does it work on Windows 98?

This dummy needs to know :-)
