That's great, thanks!
Unfortunately I haven't been able to try it out yet, but I do have some
pending thoughts from RC1 that I'd like to contribute. It may be that
some of these have already been addressed, or are different in some way,
in RC2.
Somewhat unhelpfully, I'm afraid I will be away from my SHR email for
most of the coming week, and so will be slow to follow up on any
resulting discussions. But I wanted to post these thoughts now anyway,
just because this current SHR-T RC series is looking so good, in case
the thoughts are helpful for making it even better.
* Time doesn't update immediately on resume. Since checking the current
time is one of the things that I regularly use my FR for, this is
actually quite important.
* When I close an application, the screen is often left blank - as
opposed to showing either the home screen or another open application.
Also, when in this situation, the shr_elm_softkey left and right
arrows have no effect. Need to click the home button to regain
normality.
* There is no immediate feedback after clicking the "Send" button to
send an SMS, so I am left thinking that maybe I didn't press the
button properly. Normally I did actually press the button, and after
a few seconds (about 10) the message application disappears (leaving
as blank screen, as above) - but the lack of immediate feedback is
unnerving.
* By the way, the shr_elm_softkey bug appears to have disappeared - was
it fixed by something in the feeds since RC1?
* If I am away from my home country, and send an SMS to a contact with a
local UK telephone number, I would expect the FR to automatically
convert that number to international form. It appears that it doesn't
do this - because instead I got a return SMS saying that the number
was invalid.
And finally, one more idea that isn't really specific to SHR-T or to
this RC series, but I'm curious to hear if anyone else agrees that it
would be useful...
* I think it would be useful for SMS entry (and I suppose text entry in
general) to be customisable by a set of user-specified rules. One
example would be
"<word><space><punctuation>" -> "<word><punctuation>"
to handle the case where selected word entry has added a space, but
next I want to write "!", "?", "." or "," (etc.) and so the space is
not wanted.
Other examples could be other punctuation/spacing fixes, or expanding
abbreviations. To handle situations where the user did not want a
rule to be applied (and hence to take the stress out of playing with
possible rules), there could be an "undo rule" button added to the
keyboard. Or, a backspace stroke immediately after a rule could be
interpreted as "undo rule" - in which case it would be nice to have a
simple indication that a rule has just been applied, such as the
relevant text being underlined in the message entry widget.
If no one else wants to do it, I'd like to work on this myself - so
I'd appreciate any thoughts on the rule syntax (regexps?) and detailed
behaviour, and also on particular rules that people would find useful.
Regards,
Neil
