If you have to keep track of every penny and/or you feel cheated on splitting the bill regularly, you should maybe examine your relationship with that group. (The only exception I can think of are non drinkers, in which case I usually suggest splitting the food & beverages bills separately.) If I go out today, I take one of the 2 approaches: For large groups, split the bill. For smaller groups, one person picks it up. It all evens out in life anyway.
