When I was a student, this would have made a lot of sense. It is also
something I would ask my kids to examine today.
To me though, there are a few basic guidelines. If you have to keep track
of every penny and/or you feel cheated on splitting the bill regularly, you
should maybe examine your relationship with that group. (The only exception
I can think of are non drinkers, in which case I usually suggest splitting
the food & beverages bills separately.)

If I go out today, I take one of the 2 approaches: For large groups, split
the bill. For smaller groups, one person picks it up. It all evens out in
life anyway. (again the exception would be if it's a very expensive meal,
in which case i would split the bill even in groups of 3+ people)

I know this sounds rather privileged, but C'est ce que c'est

Regards,
Mohit
