In all such cases with our friends meetups, we’d typically decide to eat at a cheaper joint (Irani / Udupi etc hotel) that’d fit the friend’s pocket, or just tacitly pick up the friend’s bill.
Things tend to work themselves out as long as there is mutual goodwill. If there isn’t, there are likely to be arguments over any sort of split, equitable or not. This works if everyone has plenty of spare money, but in my poorer days I've had situations where I feel I need to go along to a group dinner or miss out on some important networking. So I've eaten frugally, staying carefully within my budget... but then if at the end everyone wants to just split the bill equally I'd be in trouble.
