Some of the "non-standard" arrangements that have been shown to work, in my
experience:

* Each person starting their own tab at the bar for drinks and sharing the
food bill
* Someone starting the process of pre-emptively paying a sum larger than
their share
* Someone saying "I'm paying for myself and this other person"
* When we met up in Madhu's restaurant, he would take over the job of
deciding who pays what. Not sure why he took on the extra effort, but it
worked for us. :)
