There is plentyof hindu literature to suggest the opposite. Examples
(described with great relish) can be found from the texts of the 63
nayanar saints of tamil nadu. there are plenty of examples in these
scriptures of a nayanar defeating a jain saint in debate, and of the
king converting to hinduism, and immediately putting to death all jain
adherents in the kingdom... (usually by running them over with
elephants...).

since religious mythology is being dressed up in a historical outfit,
i find it strange that you dismissed it a purely professional
division...when the bhagavata puranas suggest the opposite...
Parasurama, the incarnation of vishnu (the one before rama...) took on
a "personal jihad" to rid the world of kshatriyas...an ethnic
cleansing of sorts for mere "professional differences" (this coming
from a pretty ancient source of "history"...)...
