The forum I have linked below has a very long (multiple posts) description of the life of a young Briton who was a bureaucrat in India around the 1860s. The first 4 pages are mostly flames against the chap who posted the story - but it really picks up from page 4 - and I have linked to that page Appropriately the India part of story starts in Kolkata. I found it pretty interesting - but it is really long and I haven't finished reading it yet. This chap's duties were no less hectic, and I suspect he had a lot more power. The story is, I believe a perfect description of the lives of the colonial predecessors of today's babus. http://jamesstgeorge.proboards32.com/index.cgi?board=Chitchat&action=display&thread=1171451126&page=4 shiv
