accent(s) and all the variety and musicality we bring to English!
the worst
of this attitude is evident in how we ridicule regional variations
when we
ought to revel in them. Vive la difference!
At the beginning of the XX century, it was thought that the swiss
german dialects would disappear (as the swiss french patois had) in
favor of high german.
At the beginning of the XXI century, dialect is alive and well,
especially on the internet, and after a bit of discussion even I may
discriminate speakers who live about 40 km apart on the basis of
their language.
