I simply use a .999 fine one ounce silver ingot that I cut in half the long way.
Each peice is held by an alligator clip which in turn is on the end of some 
stiff
wire (00 copper wire) which is connected to 8 D cells, and two 9 volt 
batteries, to
give me exactly 30 volts and less frequent battery replacements. I of course 
never
allow the alligator clips to get in the water. The ingot cost me $6, and I cut 
it
on a shear in my friend's machine shop. This might not be practical for most
people, but the point is that "electrode morphology" is not terribly important.
