I know animals don't feel pain like humans do. The day after my son's lab was
spayed (total hysterectomy), she jumped off the back of the couch and ran
around. We couldn't make her be careful. I know rats are very different from
us. I had two who had surgery to remove mammary tumors. One chewed through
her stitches. You could see her liver and intestines when the incision was
gaping open. I took her back to the vet....he sewed her up again. She chewed
the stitches off again. He said just leave her open. There she was with a
humongous opening in her tummy and she acted perfectly normal, ate well, and
healed shut within a couple weeks. BTW, rats are intelligent. When one fell
off the chair, it struggled to get back up into my lap. When they were loose
on the couch when I cleaned their cage, I could ask them if they wanted to go
back to their cage and they'd come running. If only they didn't have the
instinct to chew things (computer cords) and mark their
 territory.

               Pat
