Sorry Dennis, my head said anion but my fingers said cation and it said not and they said note and now you know why I failed typing class! The thinking part of the brain must not be the same part that tells the fingers where to go. The point is, if you get no plating (dark sludge) on the negative electrode, then the ions bound to something else to make a silver salt, leaving none to make it to the electrode! Or, you are vigerously stirring the water and they got knocked off, but that would give the water a grey cast.
