That is a very good point.  One could easily check if HDPE had any plasticizers 
or waxes added by simply cutting a
small piece off and putting into some water and heating it.  If I remeber right 
pure HDPE melts right at the boiling
point of water.

Anyway, the following addatives are often added to HDPE:

heat and light stabilizers (light stabilizers are usually either carbon black 
or UV absorbers)
slip agents (typically an amide)
antiblock agents
antistaic agents (primary purpose is to reduce static and dust pickup)
flame retardants
pigments
