I woked in the plastic processing inducstry for 17
years, and we used plasticizors with PVC, which is
normally a stiff polymer. By adding a "plasticizor"
such as DOP, this makes the end material more soft or
pliable. Armour all, the popular liqiuid application
put on the plastic and imitation leather surfaces of
cars to prolong life and prevent crackage, is a DOP
type plasticizor. However polyethylene is a complete
polymer in itself, not readily mixable with liquid
agents. One job we ran was the mixing of this type.
The finished product would appear dry polyethylene,
but after several days the oil that was mixed with the
product would begin "leaching out" of the material.
Dont ask me what they used that for, but it was a very
messy product once the leaching set in. Polyethylenes
are very chemically similar to waxes, and we mixed
waxes with poly to decrease their poly melting points.
The "glue gun" material is probably a lower melting
poly or a wax product. The wax acts like a oil
addition, to make the final product softer. I would
think that plastic bottles would be safe, probably
straight HDPE as you mention.
