The trouble with people is that each one thinks all the others are as weird as they are in the same way. Why would aliens be infecting food or chewing up shade? It's kids that pull the legs off spiders to watch them walk in circles. Grownups usually stomp on them..or put them outside. If 'they' [any they] wanted to kill us, they could and most likely would just do it overnight. Believe this: We are all the weirdness we need to make any sort of suffering we want to. An outside entity would have a hard time competing with our abilities. This place is an awful lot like an insane asylum.
There is a very basic 'life' error in this true statement... It makes perfect sense to be afraid of a person who would do the same thing I would do to make them afraid of me. Think feedback loop and the nature of projective perception where a defense is an attack. I can't think of anything scarier than a scared person. Every dangerously agressive person I ever ran across in various 'projects' oozed fear like a sweating athlete...justified by every other persons sweat...who were sweating fear because the other guy was.
