Steve Quinto has a misleading pdf article on his web site claiming
it shows how silver ions attack bacteria. However, in the first or
second paragraph, the authors clearly state they are working with
silver nitrate, which is not the same thing. See

Ferrofluids are used in the disk drive industry, at first to
"develop" the magnetic bit patterns for examination, then as spindle
bearings for high rpm drives that spin at 10,000 to 15,000 rpm.
Conventional ball bearings wouldn't last very long in that service.
But there may be another use for ferrofluids, or at least the
technology that produces the ferromagnetic particles.
Here is an example of a new technique to detect Alzheimer's disease.
It is a million times more sensitive than current technology, and
may lead to possible cures. It is an amazingly innovative method
that echos the way a child might play with a magnet and paper clips:
