Hmm. SMTP AUTH is probably the most convenient way to go about this. While
acknowledging that I don't know the particulars of your situation, most
modern e-mail clients support it. As far as alternatives, you can also use
'POP-before-SMTP' to temporarily authenticate your IP address for sending.
(Turn on the 'For x minutes authenticated IPs are treated as clients' in
SIMS' SMTP settings.) Having to remember to check your mail before sending
is a bit of a pain, but it's a workable solution. You could also use a VPN
or SSH tunnel. Those involve extra software and probably hardware in
addition to SIMS and your mail client(s) though, so given your reluctance
to use an external program to enable SMTP AUTH, I doubt you'd want to use
those alternatives.
