The role(s) of the SBC are generally: Terminate SIP Trunks Firewall SIP connections Deal with signalling differences
We have a software based SBC integrated into sipXecs called sipXbridge. It however is not as robust as specialized products from Ingate, Acme Packet and the like. Additionally, some SIP trunk providers will only work with their certified products. So, leveraging the certifications of a big name SBC let's you get around this. So, the real questions, if AT&T will let you connect a SIP trunk directly to sipXecs are, will they route to 5080 udp, and does sipXbridge have all the settings that you'll need. I believe there's a template for them already in the system.
