This is a small office so I don't need anything quite so complicated for fax,
but I do having the NetSatisfaxtion server (and no real FXS ports) I have an
Audiocodes ATA that has a Netsatisfaxtion custom firmware on it. It believe
they call it an HTTPS ATA. That effectively receives the fax and sends it over
HTTPS to the fax server which then makes the fax call.

Got a bunch of remote folks using Clearwire and I give them those ATAs to plug
their faxes in to. As everything's packed up and sent to the server over HTTPS
I don't have to worry about Clearwire's patchy (non-existant) fax support.

We use Patton PRi gateways from a real TELCO and then we use their FXS gateways
to connect the fax machines. ALL the DID hit sipx. All the gateways register to
sipx. We simply point the DID number in sip to the user/alias or to the unified
messaging screen to make the inbound fax paper or paperless for that device.
It's not overly simple until you have done it once, but all the DID's go one
place and everything has a CDR cut for it.

We find when a fax machine breaks, we move the DID the the back screen and keep
receiving faxes, making this approach FLEX-ible.

We just find it works well to do it like this, but using a real telco is a key
ingredient.

This is a split small business circuit. 6 voice, the rest data (plus D). They
give you an AT&T branded Edgemarc 4608T with either an Ethernet or PRI. Can't
do both, hence I can't run one DID block to PRI, another straight over IP to
Netsatisfaxtion. The problem really boils down to that the Edgemarc will do T38
over its analogue ports and over SIP. It can't do T38 over the PRI interface
which, really, is a little bit crap.

Is their handoff ethernet or pri?

We get PRI's here for 650'ish (including inbound calls free, 6000 minutes
outbound LD, 100 DID # block) per month. 23 bearer and 1 D channel. You can
strip it down with less options for 480 per month. When AT&T knocks on my
customers doors I show them the online stuff where people are down for a week
with flex. I know comcast also does a lower cost pri, but their handoff IS a
PRI.

We typically install a Patton 4960, and yeah, inbound and outbound faxes are no
problem if you have the right stuff either.

Well, AT&T are trying to be as helpful as possible at the moment so who knows.
We ordered a PRI from them... they delivered IP Flex. It took us the best part
of a month of going backwards and forwards trying to understand why I couldn't
send faxes properly before they actually admitted it wasn't a traditional PRI
service. Of course, they will deliver a PRI service but it's wildly more
expensive, can't choose another carrier because of the discount we get on
corporate cell phones... blah blah blah.

Now I did purchase a Mediant 800 to plug the T1 into which is, as is my
understanding, an SBC. I assume I'd be substantially better off using this than
Karoo ? On the other hand, I do have a deep hatred of Audiocodes so if someone
wants to tell me to try Karoo instead I'm just fine with that.

Thanks for the help !

Pete

(note: noone has ever reported getting at&t to allow sending to port 5080, we
had a template in the system from the very original days of testing with at&t
when sipxbrdidge was being built. truly we have some templates in there that
need updating, removal and insertion.)

The role(s) of the SBC are generally:

We have a software based SBC integrated into sipXecs called sipXbridge. It
however is not as robust as specialized products from Ingate, Acme Packet and
the like.

Additionally, some SIP trunk providers will only work with their certified
products. So, leveraging the certifications of a big name SBC let's you get
around this.

So, the real questions, if AT&T will let you connect a SIP trunk directly to
sipXecs are, will they route to 5080 udp, and does sipXbridge have all the
settings that you'll need. I believe there's a template for them already in
the system.

Thanks,
  Mike

I'll expand on this a bit as I'm really not familiar with SBCs and as such the
Karoo example on the wiki is a bit confusing to me at the moment. I guess I've
never really understood correctly the role of an SBC.

We're just going to have a Flex IP trunk straight into SipX (at least,
hopefully). The AT&T pipe will have a 1.1.x.x address and SipX will also have
an address on that network. It's a VM so I can just throw another vmNIC on it.

Do I still need an SBC or can I just get AT&T to point all the SIP traffic from
their end to port 5080 on my SipX ?

Thanks

Pete

Neither of those are very robust. You should consider Karoo.

they work fine as long as you use a very capable external sbc.

Hi folks

Anyone aware of the latest on running SipX with AT&T IP Flex ? It's not on
AT&T's "officially approved" list so they're reticent. I did see a post from
Ranga about it working well but that was from a couple of years ago. Just
hoping to make sure the situation is still the same.

Thanks
