Hey humanengr,
I've switched back to Skim. Lots and lots of things that really it's hard to
imagine how I went without when I was using Preview.
Then I need to ask, how is really going to be interoperability. Let's say I
make a bunch of Skim notes. Then I have the PDF on my iPad and make some
embedded annotations. When I sync it (thru Dropbox) back to my desktop, I would
guess there's a chance it's going to overwrite the PDF and perhaps erase the
Skim note EAs?
About convert notes. There's also an issue. Like I like to keep the notes
embedded but if I convert (and then embed later), often notes that already were
converted to Skim notes, are re-created as duplicates. Like if I convert notes,
make some new Skim ones, save, and then make some new notes on an unconverted
PDF on my iPad (which then has a later timestamp), sync it back, convert again
in Skim. Duplicates.
Really it would be nice if any annotations (that are part of the PDF spec) are
both automatically embedded (when normally saved) and made as Skim notes. Any
extra Skim features could be part of the Skim note EAs. Something like that, I
would guess would let Skim completely replace Preview, offer decent
interoperability, and would be transparent to the user. Seem like a decent
compromise?
