Would people be so upset if the person put the copyright notice in? If
that's the only problem then contact the person who put it in the app
store and ask him/her to do so.

Are people upset because the person is charging money? Then use the
free market and put it in the app store for less (or free). Yes, this
will cost someone money if he/she hasn't already paid Apple to be able
to do this.

The point of the BSD license, as Patrick more or less pointed out, is
precisely to let others use the code in basically whatever way they
want. There's no requirement (nor, presumably, desire from the
original authors) that someone who uses the code needs to add value,
share original contributions, or not charge money (though making Skim
available through the app store is a minimal addition of value).

Personally, I wouldn't like it if someone did this with most of the
code that I write, which is why I use the GPL. Code where I only care
about getting some credit I release under the BSD.

The icon used by Skim could easily be claimed as an unregistered
trademark. Although not as strong legally as a registered trademark,
it does afford some rights to the Skim developers. It's also not clear
whether the BSD license pertains solely to the source code (either in
binary or text format) or whether it actually includes something like
the icon.

Do reviews allow you to put in web addresses? If so maybe someone who
bought the app can put Skim's homepage in a review. (I already see
there are a couple of reviews mentioning it is a rip-off of Skim).
