Don't believe I had ASCOM of _any_ kind on this new Vista machine...and yet,
with 5, Sky Commander shows up in the chooser. Go figure. :-)

No it's not.

If you still have an older ASCOM installation file for v3 (I think v4 also
has the drivers), you can test this by saving your v3 or 4 install file
somewhere safe, and then uninstalling ASCOM v5 (use windows add/remove
programs). Then delete the ASCOM folder (normally in C:\program
files\common files). Then reinstall ASCOM v5. You'll still see SC listed
in the scope chooser because it's still listed in the registry, but it's not
really there. Try this is CdC and when you click "properties" in the scope
chooser window (after selecting SC as the scope), you'll get an error: "the
specified module could not be found".

I found this out when installing a new computer at the local observatory
last year. V5 had no SC driver and there was none for the SC on the ASCOM
scope driver download page, but I still had a v3 install file on the old
computer, so I uninstalled v5 on the new machine, installed v3, and then
re-installed v5 on top of that. Note ASCOM's home page warns not to
uninstall v4 before installing v5. You'll loose drivers.

Please see the ASCOM read me file, where it's stated multiple times that
drivers are no longer included. For example, in the "What's New" section:
"Starting with the ASCOM Platform 2008, drivers are no longer included in
the Platform. There are just too many drivers out there, and they are
revised too often, to keep re-releasing the Platform for every driver
change."
