This idea works to a point, but there are also problems with it. I've outlined the ones I see in previous messages on this list, but here are some:
Skype updates sometimes happen faster than JAWS updates, so there would still be a need to have script updates before JAWS updates sometimes. The Skype scripts now support older JAWS versions as an ongoing goal, but if the Skype scripts became part of JAWS itself, I think support for new Skype versions would stop extending to older JAWS versions. Then there's a technical point--fixable, but currently an issue: Some of the current Skype script code may only work if the Skype scripts are in the JAWS user folder, but JAWS default scripts go in the JAWS shared folder. I have not actually tested the Skype scripts in the shared folder. All that said though, there are enough plusses to incorporating Skype scripts into JAWS to make it worth considering carefully: SkypeWatch would certainly be easier to install. :) JAWS would work with Skype out of the box. JAWS developers might more closely see any issues between Skype and JAWS itself and be able to fix them in JAWS. Over all though, I still support the idea of having a separate script set for Skype that is not part of JAWS. I did once consider trying to get the scripts made into a Skype Extra, but as the scripts are needed in order to access the Skype Extras Manager, that ended up looking more like a chicken and an egg than a problem and a solution. :) On Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 08:43:10PM +0100, alex thynne wrote: Hi I would like to see Freedom Scientific bundle the skype scripts with new versions of jaws. In fact, I even go so far as to say that freedom needs to look at its updates technology so that skype set scripts can be updated from an update centre of some sort. I know it is quite possible for users of hal to update maps so they can have the very latest ones on their computers, so why not Freedom. So many blind users of jaws download skype, I would personally like to see Doug's work reflected in what is bundled with the jaws product. It would therefore follow that other script developers' products could be downloaded from the one place on the update centre idea I have. The scripts for skype are so good that I think it should be made even easier to get them. Is this feasible? I'll only post this one email as I don't want to end up going into a topic of freedom's policy on what is bundled with jaws, but I think the point is valid enough for the idea to be explored. If everyone bombards freedom with a request for doug's scripts to be incorporated into the package, eventually, freedom will have to listen to the skype community who use Doug's scripts.
