Hi!
You're entitled to your opinion, Gordan, as regards keeping up with the
times, but I think I have the right to reply to what you're saying. Although
this reply is off topic because it doesn't totally concern Skype, I hope it
will be posted on the list, because perhaps other list members will be more
understanding of my point of view than you are.
For a start, if I decide to upgrade JAWS, the most recent version of JAWS
available in France is JAWS 9, not JAWS 10. And JAWS 9 costs 1000 euros
here, way beyond what I can afford, unless I apply for financial help, which
is a long and sometimes difficult process here. I am well aware that some
JAWS users get cracked versions of this program, but that is something I
definitely don't want to do, because this is, quite frankly, illegal.
Secondly, my motto as regards technology is: "If it ain't broke, don't fix
it". In other words, I feel that, while a program continues to work, there
is no urgent need to update it just because a new one has come out. OK, I
install new Skype updates when they are released, but that's because they
continue to work for me, and if that ceases to be the case then I'll stop
upgrading. I have already stopped upgrading Internet Explorer, version 8 of
which won't even work with JAWS 9, as some friends have told me. And whether
programs stay compatible or not, I think that each person has the right to
choose whether they want to upgrade or stay with the version they're used to
of a program, whether it's Skype or anything else.
I am grateful to Doug that he still makes his JAWS scripts for Skype
compatible with JAWS 6, and I hope that will continue for some time yet,
since I'm probably not the only JAWS 6 user out there who also uses Skype
and the scripts.
I also hope that the "got-to-have-the-newest-stuff" brigade don't waste
thread space on this list by giving me a grilling about my point of view on
this subject, but I'm as entitled to my opinion as they are to theirs. Now
let's drop the subject of old versus new, please, and get back to the
subject of Skype!
Bye for now, and happy skyping, however old or new your Skype and your
screenreader are!
