It's been a long time since I did any manual LaTeX writing, five
or so years, and before the recent "2e" version appeared. I
learned while at Uni, maybe ten or eleven years ago. I learned
from "the lion book": by Leslie Lamport. It's really good, and
I believe it's been kept fairly up to date. Maybe you could
find a copy at a public library to borrow?
Another alternative is to build LyX, or possibly KLyX. They don't
produce particularly "nice" looking LaTeX, but they do produce nice
printed output, and it "feels" like LaTeX while you're using it.
You don't have to do any significant learing...

Save it as ASCII text, and read it with LyX. You'll lose all
your formatting, but at least you can re-apply it pretty easily
in LyX.
Or, you can re-apply the formatting with some well-considered
sed or vi macros...
