A friend of mine used to drive his step-father's van to the train
station every morning and catch the train in to uni (UNSW, not UTS!).
One unfortunate morning, there was an empty wallet left exposed on the
driver seat which had been left there accidentally by my friend's
step-father. When he returned, the driver's side window had been smashed
and the wallet had been taken.
The moral of the story is: If you must leave valuable items in the car,
never ever leave them in plain sight from the outside of the car. Put
them in the boot of the car (assuming that that is not also visible from
the outside), preferably before you arrive at your destination (so
people don't see you putting stuff there).
Matthew
ps. The following winter, my friend used the same van to travel from
Penrith to Blaxland to do the graveyard shift at the Mobil service
station. The window was still missing.
