To me, the purpose of a name is to identify an entity that will most easily
be understood by others.

Yes, assuming that others understand it the way you do, which
sometimes and most of the time isn't the case.

Ever tried telling a person to switch to GNU/Linux?

I always write 'GNU/Linux'. When speaking, sometimes I rather say GNU,
and tell them its Linux-based. I only say/write 'Linux' to someone who
know what I am referring to. Without assumption. For example, respect
that my official name is "LAM YONGXIAN", though you can call me
"YONGXIAN" if you know me. I dun want to commit the same mistake by
introducing new users to call the full system 'Linux', which reflect
'Linus philosophy' instead. I myself was mislead once. This is perhaps
the easiest way to keep people linked to the software freedom
philosophy, instead of introducing later. Thanks =)
