bingo. i see /dev/term/c ... connecting a ttymon to that device yielded a login 
prompt via ipmitool. i'll need to either reconfig smartos to include that 
possible device, or find a way to change this in firmware. there appears to be 
no related setting in the ipmi web service, so i'll be rebooting tonight to 
peek at the bios. 

next will be tackling the original problem, which is the magically disappearing 
network connections (both console os and kvm instance).
