Because the console on the serial port allows one to manage systems as if 
physically there... from another continent.

Couple serial console with IPMI power on/off and reset, and unless the hardware 
busts, it can be managed from anywhere.

Hardware solutions which provide video, mouse and keyboard multiplexing are 
often OS dependent, do not work well with all operating systems, or do not work 
at all.

Video and mouse are utterly useless when one has distributed datacenters with 
hundreds of thousands of hosts in each. You physically cannot click fast enough 
in enough GUI's to maintain systems on such a massive scale.

Serial console, on the other hand, is plain ASCII interface. And that *can* be 
automated, but the best part is that it requires no extra software whatsoever 
if done exactly as I recommended earlier. It just works.
