I am also having issues with the SOL on this board (the KVM part works fine though), and in trying to troubleshoot the SOL issue, I restored defaults in the BIOS and on the next boot the X550 nics were there and working... The SOL doesn't work in Linux either so, its probably not SmartOS itself causing that issue.
