Mail under 10.4 and early 10.5 did have a few problems with large storage mailboxes, mostly over 1GB. I spent a lot of time recovering those mailboxes by splitting them into manageable chunks and reimporting them. I haven't seen any of that corruption lately though, I'm sure they must've fixed the problem. I have clients with 10GB+ mail storage folders without any problems.
