Hi Chris,

Thanks for your help.

The PowerBook was dead in the water this morning. It had been left overnight
and when my wife went to check her mail, the screen filled with horizontal
lines and then froze. Following your advice I reset the PMU and restarted. All
appeared fine and I reset time and date (it had reset to 1970), and all seems
to be working for the moment, except for Apple Mail. All my mailboxes are
unavailable. The message is

The server "mail.mac.com" cannot be contacted on port 993.

Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this situation.

Martin
