Hi Sam, That seems to have done the trick as far as Internet access is concerned. I am obliged for the advice. Sadly the machine is still exhibiting terminal tendencies. It looks as if the video is knackered, which I believe would mean a new logic board.
Looking at the age of the PowerBook I fear that spending any money to repair it would not be a brilliant idea. With luck I can extract the data from the hard disk and that's more valuable than the computer. It's been a delightful machine to own and I shall miss it like mad. Not really the time to be buying a replacement.
