I eventually managed to enter the passcode and disable it but the
phone's still not working. I know their answer makes no sense but they
seem to be refusing to accept responsibility...

They haven’t repaired it properly and their answer makes no sense. Let them
know that you’ll post a message on Facebook, Twitter and SMUG to say that
people should avoid them. That might make them sit up ;-)
