I converted some negatives via a scanner but IIRC the thing that held the slides wasn't entirely necessary, it was the scanning and inversion that was important (built-in).

When I had some slides at work that needed professional conversion, they actually just took photos of them to digitise rather than a scanner, but that was nome time ago. At that point (over 10 years ago) scanners couldn't do as well as an SLR. But if you have one of those, might be worth trying it.
