This has been a really helpful thread, thanks! I laughed at the 'shoebox' analogy, reminding me of my parents who have multiple such boxes with 40+yrs of memories in 6x4 format that they're now sadly struggling to remember who's who, what's what and where's where - we're making a start!
As a result for the past 10yrs we've been sorting in iPhoto / Photos as described, but also treat ourselves to an annual printed hardback album. It's a real joy and the children too just love taking them off the shelf from time to time and looking back. (And since Apple stopped the direct ordering, we've used the Mimeo Photos extension and it's been great - a little dearer, but same quality and brilliant customer service, and no, I don't work for them!)
