yes, and no,

you see although they phased out the PCMCIA slot consider these options:

1) get a used laptop, so you can beat it up doing these type of projects
that has a serial port and PCMCIA Slots, lots of new laptops don't have
serial's or PCMCIA slot anymore, plus it's much cheaper and you'll save
lots, try e-bay or craigslist, but downside is buyer-beware "as-is", right?

2) also, if you order from Dell, you can specify a serial slot or PCMCIA
slot, and they will custom build it that way for you, at no extra costs

3) AND no pcmcia slot is not a bad thing, explanation
- these newer laptops have built-in wifi cards, which is a misnomer from
on-board, it's not on the mother board, but open one of the screwed flaps on
the back, and you will see the on-board wi-fi card, it's actually a slot and
a card.

but notice the 2 antennae wires, this wires the ON-board wi-fi card to the
ENTIRE laptop chassis, so that the entire chassis is now the extended
antennae, include the monitor,

instead on the PCMCIA card, and all you have is it's antennae and maybe a
external hook up if it has one.

End
