Clueless Newbie Alert!

(I have the sense that both this list and the socalwug meetings are open and friendly to novices [to wireless, not to laptops/computers in general], please don't flame me too bad if I'm wrong.)

Premise for all that follows (short version). I lost about 75% of my vision a few years back. Only recently, through adapting rather than regaining sight, have I regained some ability to use my laptop screen rather than a humongous external monitor. Assume that most of what follows is for use in a wireless net in my own home, though, very occasionally, I do travel.

1 Can someone give a good explanation of pros/cons of 802.11b v. 802.11g (or point me to some good sites)?

2. Current laptop has 802.11b built in (though I've never used it in part for the reason above) Toshiba 9000, Win 2000 Pro, Earthlink DSL at home if any makes a difference). Thinking seriously of getting a new laptop, most I've looked at now use 802.11g. Assume I'd want to use both on the same home wireless net, concurrently. Any reason why 802.11 b and g can't be used at the same time on same wireless net?

3. I'd like to come to at least some of the Pasadena meetings, but I cannot drive and cab fare from Culver City is obscene. Nearest major intersection to me is Overland and Jefferson. Anyone who goes to the meets who would be willing to drive me?

4. Though my sense is that setting up a home net is not hard, I'm leery of doing it myself because of the vision limitations. *If* I decide to do it (largely dependent on whether I do get a new laptop), anyone out there who'd be willing to do it for me, and who knows what the heck he/she is doing? Willing to pay reasonable (whatever that means) labor (plus parts, of course), but don't want to spend a fortune, don't think that's really necessary. Or is it better just to have some place like Best Buy do it - if memory serves, they're advertising that they'll do the setup if you buy the stuff from them.

Thanks.

-Jim
