Not an expert on the issue, but I've seen comments about the "fact" that many audio cards are very slow at changing gain, and input/output ports.
I've also seen where some have used relays to switch the inputs/outputs and overcome the port latency issue. How real the gain issue is? Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in.
