I'll make a post so that all here can benefit when I find a suitable
fast processor. One issue with speed is the package: real fast
processors tend to be BGA. I was against a particular DDC at a place I
worked specifically because of that package, or maybe it was more the
personality of the guy who had the idea...

A fun thing about the embedded PowerPC would be closeness to my Mac  .

DSPs like the ADI Blackfin are very fast, cheap, and some are available in 
QFP. Although the ADI tools are very expensive, gcc is available. I've used 
them for fast number crunching rather than their DSP capability.
