How about pointcaching/alembifying/plotting your character asset?
That stuff is supposed to be supported out of the 2012/2013 box via *.fbx, pointcache and alembic. alembic Crate, a 3rd party wrapper tool you might like to look into can be found here: http://exocortex.com/products/crate/ It is really nice to have just the mesh(es) in the viewport and don´t bother about anything but texturing&shading&lighting them.
