I mentioned this over on the Modo beta forums, but it's also worth mentioning here. Houdini is never going to be a replacement for a direct modelling application because of the very nature of proceduralism. But since H14 there has been a concerted effort to improve the direct modelling user experience. Rigging in Houdini I think has reached a point where the procedural nature of Houdini is enhancing UX rather than diminishing it. And animation is at a place where as long as you don't attempt to recreate XSI approaches in Houdini it's providing a UX that caters to far more than VFX pipelines (in truth, animation still has a few kinks to work out but SESI are getting there).
As long as you embrace the Houdini way of things, H16 is far closer to being a direct replacement for XSI than at any time since EOL was announced. And this is in large part due to SESI being far more focused on the needs of the growing and more diverse community than the likes of Autodesk will ever allow the Maya team to be. So many of the changes in H16 are a direct result of feedback from XSI 2 Houdini early adopters such as Jordi. And in fairness, the C4D community have added greatly to the Houdini UX over this time too (Houdini Engine has been a huge success for Maxon, and a virtual Trojan horse for SESI too).
