I am the under the impression, and this is just my opinion, that it is both.
First, the strong foundations on mathematics SideFX are implementing are now being taken advantage acrosss the whole software. For example, the work done on FEM for fractures is now the foundation to the new skinning algorithm (Biharmonics), the same could be said with cloth, fluids, etc… But it is also obvious there has been a growth in the development efforts across the board and specially obvious on the gaming side, which it is also passing to the VFX side, like height fields have had a major push on the new oceans for example. All in all my naive view is that they are now getting the results of planting the right seeds with the right motivation and vision a few years ago But I am not an insider so this is just my conclusions based on observing the last years since H9 and what they are doing.
